Canon 7D Firmware Update Ver. 2.0.0

Canon has finally released the new firmware update for the 7D. Some of you may have never updated the firmware in your Canon camera before. Well have no fear, Mike is here. In this tutorial I go over the process step by step showing every detail along the way.

The process is quite simple and can be completed one of two ways. First, go ahead and download the firmware update from Canon’s website: Download Firmware Update

  1. The first way is to copy the firmware update file to your CF (compact flash) memory stick and then insert the media back into your camera. You will then press the “menu” button on your camera and go to the firmware page and begin the updating process.
  2. The second way is to use the EOS Utility software that came with your Canon 7D camera and install the firmware update through the software.

In this tutorial, I show how to update the firmware with option 1.

Since I use my 7D for mostly video, I was really disappointed Canon did not include too many new features for video mode. However, on the plus side, there are quite a few new features on the photography end of things that will only make the 7D all the more glorious.

I’ll be touching on these new features later on once I test things out a bit. If you’ve got questions, don’t be shy… ask away.

  1. I have put the firmware on my CF. When I go to the third from last wrench, scroll down to the firmware version and hit enter I get “Memory card containing firmware is required to update”. I click ok…. and it goes back to the original screen. Any suggestions?

  2. I have 3 memory cards for my 7D, do I need to copy the update file to all the memory cards?

because it didnt seem like I needed to, when I put in the other cards, all the additional features seemed to still be there in the menu when different cards were put in,

but I’d just like to know what you have to say about that

    1. The firmware just needs to be installed on one CF card. Once the firmware installation process is complete, you don’t need the file any longer.
